Knowing When to Quit in Texas Holdem
You should be folding a lot in Texas holdem in order to come out on top. When you fold you don’t lose and you keep your money until you really have a good hand. Most players want to stay in the game. They are always thinking, if I get this card at the turn, I’ll be on top, or if I get this card on the river I’ll have that straight flush, but all of these thoughts are just wishful thinking. The law of probability shows you that it is highly unlikely that the precise card you need will come up.
In Texas holdem you need to be looking for any indication that tells you to fold. It is much better to be a nervous player with money in this game, then to lose your shirt too quickly.
Don’t Ever be Pressured to Continue
Let’s say you call a raise and make two bets before the flop. You only have an A and K from different suits. There is a player that raises again and the next player raises again, by the time it gets to you it’s increased by four. This is the point where you shouldn’t feel pressured by the players. Fold and wait for the next hand.
The Position
When you are in a bad position then you need to be playing tight. The place to take your chances is in a good position.
Bluff as Little as Possible
Bluffing is not really a good strategy in a limited Texas Holdem game. It doesn’t take much to call your bluff, and they will probably end up beating you.
Don’t Keep Going Cause You are Looking for the Straight
Holding on because you are waiting for that one card you need is not going to work and especially not if some of the cards on the table are suited. Unless they are high cards they are not good starting cards.
A lot of people tend to stay in the game because they think they have a potentially great hand, and that usually means they have two suited cards. Now when two suited cards that can be used in a flush are laid down at the flop, then you need to be aware that there may be a flush draw (two or more people will have a flush). When the turn or river comes in with another flush card and other opponents start betting and raising, then it’s probably time to fold.
In conclusion in Texas Holdem to become a great player you should be folding much more than what you are playing. Remember you are looking for opportunities to fold.
